EDUCATION - MEMBER COURSES - SUPPLEMENTARY COURSES SKIPPER SAVER
Most of us boat with our First Mate who usually helps by performing any number of tasks such as handling lines when docking or taking over the helm temporarily when the skipper needs to be elsewhere. But, how many First Mates could assume full control of the boat in the event that the skipper becomes incapacitated? Often, the First Mates' enjoyment of boating is tainted by the fear that something might happen to the skipper that would place him, or her, in just such a predicament.
Skipper Saver is a brief course that is designed to provide crewmembers with the information, knowledge, tools and confidence to take charge in an emergency, to stabilize the situation and bring the boat to a safe harbor. There are four consecutive classroom lessons followed by a private on-the-water demonstration in the family boat.
- Lesson 1: Outlines emergency procedures to be followed for a boat at anchor or underway in both protected and open waters - Lesson 2: Fundamentals of boat handling, maneuvering and docking; man overboard procedures - Lesson 3: Radiotelephone operation and demonstration; determining position; use of GPS - Lesson 4: Demonstration of fire extinguisher operation; emergency medical procedures - Lesson 5: Hands-on operation of the family boat with either a third-party observer or having the skipper act as the observer
There are no homework assignments or written examination. Those who complete the course will be awarded a Certificate of Achievement and a Skipper Saver patch.
