Visual Distress Signals
   
Pyrotechnic
      Handheld Flare - Day or Night use (better at night).
      Smoke Flare - Day use only
      Aerial or Parachute Flare - Day or Night use (better at night).
   
Non-Pyrotechnic
      Orange Distress Flag or Kite - Day time use only
      *Orange Distress Streamer  Day use only
      SOS Signal Light - Night use only
      *Signaling Mirror - Day use only
(* =  Doesn't fill requirement, but good additional device to have.)


What You are Required to Carry (minimum)
   
Boats less than 16', canoes & kayaks
      Night signals required when operating at night.
   
Boats over 16'
      Pyrotechnic
         3 Day + 3 Night or 3 Combination Day/Night
      Non-Pyrotechnic
         Orange Distress Flag (Day use)
         SOS Signal Light (Night use)

Note: All pyrotechnic signals have expiration dates.
      It does not fill the requirement if it is expired.
